Puzzle for January 8, 2009

OK, last question about the pennies:
[remember: Each day I'll save double the number of pennies as the day before (ie today is one, tomorrow is two,
the next day will be four, etc). ]

Obviously, running away carrying all those pennies wouldn't be possible.

The bad guys in movies always ask for a million dollars in "small unmarked bills." If a 'bill' weighs 5 grams, how much would they all weigh?
How much room would it take?
Could the bad guy really run away with this 'ransom' money?

==================================

The Solution

$1 bills would weigh 5,000,000 grams. Or 5000 kilograms. How heavy is this? There are 2.2 pounds per kilogram so the bills would weigh 11,000 pounds. Not quite portable.

$5 bills would be 1/5 that weight: 2200 pounds. Still not portable.

$10 bills would be 1/2 of that: 1100 pounds. Still not portable.

$20 bills would be 1/2 of that: 550 pounds. Still not portable.>/p>

$100 bills would be 1/5 of that: 110 pounds. Portable but not "small and unmarked."

$50 bills would be twice that: 220 pounds. Portable but probably not "small and unmarked."
