Puzzle for January 7, 2009

So, I started saving pennies.
[remember: Each day I'll save double the number of pennies as the day before (ie today is one, tomorrow is two,
the next day will be four, etc). ]

So now I have all these pennies stacking up. How much do they all weigh (assuming the average penny weighs 3 grams)?

If I had a duffle bag, how many dollars could I carry?

==================================

The Solution

$100 of pennies would weigh 30,000 grams = 30 kilograms = 66 pounds-- I can carry this.

$500 of pennies would weigh 150,000 grams = 150 kilograms = 330 pounds-- I can't carry this.

$1000 of pennies would weigh 300,000 grams = 300 kilograms = 660 pounds-- I can't carry this!

$1 Million of pennies would weigh 100,000,000 grams = 100,000 kilograms = 2,200,000 pounds-- I certainly couldn't carry that!

Assuming I was really strong today, I could carry 200 pounds of pennies. That would be 90.90... kilograms = 90909.0909... grams which would be 90909 pennies.= $303.03

We can check that by making sure 90909 is about 3 times the 30,000 pennies we started with
