A story in the Los Angeles Times said five people involved with forming Area 51 had come forward with an alternate explanation of the creation of the Air Base now known for supposedly housing "alien" artifacts and technology.

The article suggests that the base was responsible for many UFO sightings as they developed a special spherical plane code-named the OXCART which is only now becoming unclassified.

Because of the secrecy of the program, the Air Force eventually created Project Bluebook to explore all of the "sightings" of UFOs. According to the article, their findings comprise 74,000 pages of reports.
