This week in 1989, then 28-year-old Wayne Gretzky broke the Hockey career points record of 1850. He entered the game one point below the record, tied the record about five minutes into the game then didn't score again until overtime where he finally scored his 1851st point.

By the time Gretzky retired at the end of the 1998-99 season, he held or shared 61 NHL records. In all, he scored 894 goals and tallied 1,963 assists for 2,857 points in 1,487 games.
