Puzzle for October 9, 2008

Yesterday we talked about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire lasted two days, destroyed 17,450 buildings, and killed up to 300 people.

Legend says the fire was started by a cow kicking over a lantern in the O'Leary barn.

I'm wondering how the destruction of the Great Chicago Fire compares to the yearly totals we mentioned yesterday:

  • Kitchen: 440 deaths per 150,000 fires which equals 1 death per 341 fires
  • Living Room: 690 deaths per 14,100 fires which equals 1 death per 20 fires
  • Bedroom: 690 deaths per 30,400 fires which equals 1 death per 44 fires
