September 29, 1982 began a three-day string of deaths caused by cyanide-laced Extra Strength Tylenol capsules. The seven victims in Chicago caused Tylenol to recall 264,000 bottles nationally once it was determined that the tainted bottles did not come from the Johnson & Johnson factories.

The company offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the vandal. And they offered free product replacement with the safer tablet form (the capsules could be opened by a vandal and "refilled")
